Insurance more expensive in the North, new Kia Cee’d for 2012 and Toyota Yaris hybrid

Friday, January 13th, 2012

Motorists living in the north of England have seen their insurance premiums rocket to three times the rate of inflation and beyond, according to an article in the Daily Telegraph this week.

The research revealed that Bradford saw the quickest rise in insurance premiums in 2011, with an annual increase of 17.1%, more than 13% the national average. Oldham and Manchester fared little better, with a respective 14.8% and 14.4% rise in premiums over 2010 figures.

Insurance premium rises will be of great interest to customers looking at cars on finance, as they look to budget for their new car. The average premium paid across all age groups for comprehensive car insurance is now £844, while ‘third party, fire and theft’ customers endured an annual increase of 10.2% in 2011.

Of course, the prices can vary significantly between age groups, although prices based on gender will soon be a thing of the past thanks to a recent EU ruling. This rise in insurance costs shows that it’s well worth shopping around for better deals to suit your budget.

It’s also worth looking at smaller, more inexpensive cars when looking at your next car finance deal. Smaller cars will mean cheaper car insurance and lower running costs, such as tax and fuel. Toyota is keen to exploit this market with their new Yaris hybrid, which has been revealed ahead of the forthcoming Geneva Motor Show.

The new Yaris has a similar power-train to the larger Auris, though it’s been scaled down to fit into the smaller Yaris packaging. The hybrid system is coupled with a 1.5 litre petrol engine, and a battery pack which is 20% lighter than the batteries in the Auris. The resulting performance is 98bhp, and a tiny amount of CO2 emissions – perfect for people looking for green cars on finance deals.

There are further clever additions to the Yaris design as well. As the smaller battery pack fits snugly under the rear seats, the Yaris hybrid has the same interior and boot space as its petrol and diesel sisters. A previous drawback to hybrid or electric cars was a loss of space inside as designers struggled to find space for the extra technology. If a Toyota Yaris hybrid sounds like the perfect match for you, it’ll be available via car finance deals in the UK this summer.

Another car due to make its début at Geneva is a new generation Kia Cee’d. The current model has been a big hit for the Korean car maker, and has been popularised by hit TV show Top Gear, as the car used for the ‘Star in a reasonably priced car’ challenge.

The new Cee’d features updated styling and will be available in a variety of body styles, including three and five door hatchbacks as well as an estate. Kia’s improved quality and design, as well as an unrivalled seven year warranty, ensures that the Cee’d will be well worth considering on a car finance deal. It’ll be available to order in the spring, with deliveries commencing in June.

Drug-driving shake-up, VW’s E-Bugster and Hyundai Velostar

Tuesday, January 10th, 2012

The government is planning a major shake up of existing drug-driving legislation, which would make it easier to carry out convictions for drug-related offences on the road. The new rules, if implemented, will allow the police to test suspected drug-drivers at the roadside. In 2010, there were 39 road deaths caused directly by drug-driving. While this figure seems low, drivers who have both alcohol and drugs in their system are currently only prosecuted for alcohol offences alone.

As such, the government is currently in talks with medical professionals to determine tolerance levels of recreational drugs such as cannabis and cocaine. With this information on board, it’s hoped that strict new rules can be drawn up to make it illegal to drive a car shortly after taking drugs. Such moves are likely to be welcomed by motorists and road safety charities alike, many of whom have stated that this issue has long been neglected.

Another area of the motoring world that’s currently receiving widespread attention is the electric sector. Experts are suggesting that 2012 will see electric car technology grow in popularity, starting to genuinely challenge for the hearts and minds of people everywhere who are considering their next car finance deal.

Cars greener than buses, Fiat previews 500 MPV and Toyota revives the Supra

Wednesday, January 4th, 2012

When looking at cars on finance, many of us feel the twinge of guilt in the back of our minds about the environmental impact our new motor might have. Sure, some of us want a big car with a gas-guzzling powerful engine, but we also know how it might affect the planet as well as our pockets – some us might be put off using a car altogether and instead use public transport to get around.

However, Auto Express Magazine this week revealed that a Government report contains findings which show that the g/km CO2 ratings for buses outside London are substantially higher than most cars on sale over the last decade when occupancy levels are taken into account.

Renault announces big shake-up, Optimus Prius shows off

Saturday, December 31st, 2011

French car giant Renault has announced that the next generation Laguna will be a crossover, after it revealed last week that there is to be a major shake-up of its range in 2012. Renault is planning to bin the current Laguna in February, with the hatch, estate and coupe all up for the chop.

The decision is due to poor sales, with annual figures for the manufacturer down by 50,000 over the last five years. Other models facing the chop are the Espace and Grand Espace people carriers, Modus and Grand Modus, Wind roadster and the Kangoo. The cull represents 10% of the current sales figures for Renault, as they look at a new strategy to make their products more desirable as car finance deals for customers in the UK.

Nissan winter checks, free blue badges in Wales and Kia’s new Ray EV

Friday, December 30th, 2011

Winter can be an awkward time for motorists, with a host of seasonal challenges – including adverse weather conditions and poor roads – coming into play. The festive season is one when we rely on our cars, and use them to visit friends and relatives to deliver gifts and cheer. It’s always important to perform some simple checks to make sure your car is fit for the road during winter, and tyres and lights are vitally important for safety reasons.

Thankfully, Nissan is one manufacturer willing to go that extra mile for their customers during winter – if you have a Nissan (on car finance or otherwise) over three years old, it’s eligible for a free winter check to make sure it’s in tip-top condition.

End game for Saab, Mercedes launch luxury hybrid and Audi previews hot A1

Saturday, December 24th, 2011

The Saab saga took an unfortunate turn this week as the quirky Swedish car maker finally lost its battle with bankruptcy. Saab had once been a popular car finance option for a select market who sought a quality alternative to German brands such as BMW and Mercedes. However, over the past two years it suffered from falling sales figures and struggled to maintain stability.

A deal had been put in place between Saab’s parent company and a Chinese investment group to rescue the manufacturer, but this deal was ultimately rejected by Saab’s former owners, General Motors. Their objections centred mainly on the grounds of intellectual property rights, which the American car giant did not want to see fall into the hands of another company.

Famous Fords on display and Nissan launches electric race car

Monday, December 12th, 2011

Famous Fords, grand and small, that have graced the big screen are being displayed at an exhibition marking Ford Britain’s centenary celebrations.

Notable Fords that have served silver screen characters such as Harry Potter, James, Bond, Doctor Who and Lady Penelope, have been brought together for display in Elstree Studios, London.

Whereas some production models, such as the Mondeo, are still available for motorists today through car financing deals or to buy outright, other varieties on display are far rarer. The six-wheel Ford-badged GABV1 from the 2004 Thunderbirds movie is unlikely to be on sale anywhere – whether through car finance plans or otherwise!

Seat goes green, Saab 9-3 unveiled, and Jaguar’s XJ sports larger teeth

Thursday, November 17th, 2011

Spanish car maker Seat is the latest manufacturer to commit to sustainable, environmentally friendly transport with the announcement that they are developing plug-in hybrid and battery-powered cars. The green technology will be offered across the model range, adding another plus point for those considering Seat finance deals.

The plug-in, hybrid system has been dubbed ‘TwinDrive’, and is set to go on sale in 2015. The next generation Leon has become the guinea pig for the new TwinDrive system, which will later find itself in other cars in the Seat range – by 2016 the battery-powered, zero emissions power-train will be available to customers seeking environmentally friendly cars on finance.

The new Leon is due to be unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show next March, and – as well as the new generation power – it is believed that the Leon line-up will be further expanded with new body styles, including a three door coupe and estate. Seat is sometimes thought of as a ‘left-field’ brand, but with Volkswagen robustness, quality, Spanish flair, and a lower than VW price, they are worth a second look.

Another supposed ‘left-field’ choice when it comes to cars on finance is Saab. The Swedish car firm’s financial hardships have been well documented in the media, but with a lifeline thrown to them by a Chinese investment group, there may be happier times ahead. One such glimpse into these good times is demonstrated by online leaks of pictures of the next generation Saab 9-3.

Showing a more aggressive and sporty stance than the current generation 9-3, the new model borrows heavily from the current 9-5. A whole new chassis arrangement is to be developed, allowing Saab to move away from its GM underpinnings, shared with the old Vauxhall Vectra.

Both front-wheeled drive and all-wheel drive are believed to be in the pipeline, with some of the smaller petrol units coming from BMW. Hybrid technology is held in high regard by Saab, and is expected to be offered in the new 9-3. The new model’s launch is expected to take place next year, and will be of great interest to anyone interested in unconventional cars on finance.

One brand which does not struggle with a left-field image is Jaguar. Its flagship saloon, the XJ, has now been upgraded with two new optional sports packs; the Sport pack and the Speed pack.

The Sport brings a series of interior and exterior styling changes which will put a more aggressive stance on the executive express, and is available on all XJs, apart from the range-topping supercharged V8. The Speed pack is only available on the supercharged V8, which removes the 155mph limiter and increases top speed to 174mph. The added sporty exterior styling cues play an important part in the stability of the XJ at the increased high speeds.

If you’re thinking of taking up a new car finance deal, shop around online to find the most competitive offers. By comparing prices on car finance deals, you could make big savings and have your new car delivered direct to your door.

Jaguar Land Rover creates 1,000 jobs while Ford unveils latest Ecoboost

Wednesday, November 16th, 2011

There’s great news for the British car industry this week as Jaguar Land Rover has announced the creation of 1,000 new jobs at its Soulihull plant. It signifies a remarkable turnaround for the Indian owned company, which was on its knees during the credit crunch and was rumoured to be on the verge of asking to be bailed out. Since then the company has gone from strength to strength.

Helping its cause, Jaguar Land Rover has launched new models such as the updated Jaguar range, which have brought the marque into the 21st century and have allowed them to offer great value when it comes to car finance deals. Land Rover has not rested on its laurels either, and is currently basking in the praise its new Range Rover Evoque has received from all corners of the motoring press. The Evoque, with its crisp, modern exterior styling and an interior designed by Victoria Beckham, is bound to become a popular choice it when it comes to Range Rover Evoque finance deals.

The Knowledge: Saab saved and Toyota protects the world while Ford protects our young

Monday, November 14th, 2011

It has been a thoroughly rotten time for Saab, the quirky Swedish car maker. After the global recession kicked in, Saab’s parent company General Motors was on the brink and decided to sell off a large chunk of its portfolio. Amid much bargaining, Saab was eventually sold to Dutch firm Spyker in 2010, but has since run into further difficulties.

Thankfully, a Chinese buyer by the name of Pang Da and Youngman has agreed a memorandum of understanding with Saab’s parent company. Whilst it still needs to be approved by Saab’s shareholders and the Chinese government, it is hoped by many that the deal will go through. Although Saab may seem quirky and different, the brand is renowned for safety, innovation and quality – and there are plenty of appealing options when it comes to Saab car finance deals. With its tremendously loyal following and reputation for offering an alternative to the norm, it would be great to see Saab survive.
