Land Rover Discovery: It’s time to disco
The Land Rover Discovery is somewhat of a British institution, having been sold in the UK since 1989 and has been a common sight on our roads since it first went on sale. A lot of this interest came over from prospective Range Rover buyers, who now had a cheaper and more accessible alternative without the need for too much compromise. The Discovery was formed out of strategy, not necessity. Land Rover were getting worried in the mid-eighties at the rise of Japanese car makers, and their ability to mass manufacture high quality materials and therefore build excellent cars at comparatively low prices. The Range Rover would no longer make the grade as there were many cheaper alternatives hitting the market, and this was before car leasing options.
So the Discovery was born to compete with high value Japanese competition, and was essentially a re-bodied Range Rover with with less kit and cheaper materials to facilitate a lower asking price. These days, the strategy is slightly different and if you were to get a Land Rover Discovery leasing plan, you will be getting a car much the same as the Range Rover, albeit without some engine choices and with a body not quite as aesthetically pleasing. This is for a reason however, as there is far more room in the Disco.
You also get the same chassis, the same four wheel drive system and the same excellent build quality. So with a Land Rover Discovery car lease you will get a monstrously capable off-road car and, if you have large or precious cargo (or both) then it will also be a very usable road car.
Land Rover Discovery: a flawed hero
Land Rover have been on something of a roll recently, and popularity of their Discovery model remains strong, particularly on Land Rover Discovery finance deals, which can make getting behind the wheel more affordable, considering the brand’s premium pricing.
Whilst Land Rover models can be classed as having premium price tags, ranging from between £38k – £50k, they’re not completely inaccessible. This explains why Land Rover Discovery leasing is a popular way of securing the car, as whilst they are relatively expensive, the build quality and versatility of the Discovery makes it a top contender in this class – and therefore good value for money.
So, if you do decide on a Land Rover Discovery lease deal, will you be driving a car with the same ‘X Factor’ as its bigger brother, the Range Rover? Well, to a certain extent, yes.
Its chunky design, high seating position, BMW build quality and quirky personality will no doubt win you over. There’s a choice of Ford and Jaguar engines too, including the powerful but thirsty 5 litre V8. We would recommend the 3 litre TD V6 version, as this provides even more torque than the V8 and is more economical at the pumps.
You should, however, be aware that a Land Rover Discovery leasing plan will get you a car that may have a couple of minor annoying tendencies. For example, it can have a strangely choppy ride, considering its ride height. This is somewhat counterbalanced by its accomplished off-road chassis, which means that if you were ever to give your Discovery a dirt bath, it would cope admirably.
Overall, a Land Rover Discovery lease deal will get you a big, capable off-road car on your driveway that will be versatile, if a little rough around the edges.
