Audi A5: practical style
Everything about the Audi A5 convertible is suave, from the bodywork to the classy cabin inside. But with a car in this price range you want more than a sharp look so, with that in mind, it’s worth checking to see what else the new Audi A5 offers the prospective buyer.
The first thing worth noting is the excellent choice of engines – a point that Parkers makes in its summary of the sportback version of the motor. The same can also be said of the Audi A5 coupé, which dates back slightly longer. All of their engines – both petrol and diesel – are impressive, with the 2.0 TDI diesel possibly coming top of the class, returning 170 bhp and 54mpg with emissions also being fairly low at 137g/km of CO2. What’s more, models with this engine or the 2.0 TFSI come with a start-stop system, helping to reduce fuel consumption further.
The excellent engines provide a powerful drive, but the handling is also good on new models, with Top Gear commending the Audi A5 hatchback as being one of a new breed of Audis that can handle as well as they ride. The steering responds well across all models, but can feel a bit light to some, depending on what you’re used to driving.
The car is well-built throughout and, as mentioned before, the A5’s cabin has a classy, luxurious feel which befits the price tag. Seats are good and, if you’re into them, the S line versions of the sportback get sports seats, providing additional side support.
Surprisingly, the sporty version of the new Audi A5 offers just as much practicality as the hatchback: in the sportback model, a 480 litre boot that extends to 980 once the rear seats are down means large loads are a doddle, while the coupé’s boot is a decent size too.
Overall, this is a well-refined, powerful and stylish car that’s as practical as it is good-looking.
