BMW 5 Series: setting the standard
As Auto Express notes, the BMW 5 Series sets the standard in the executive sector, and it’s easy to see why: it’s classy, superbly refined and boasts top-grade performance with handling to match. But does it warrant the price tag?
In short, yes. Granted, there are more affordable cars, but BMW works hard to build cars worthy of their cost and the BMW 5 Series estate epitomises that effort in many ways. First of all, there’s the engines – as you’d probably expect, BMW offers a huge range but Top Gear gives particular approval to the 520d option, which has 184bhp and will shift from 0-62mph in just 8.1 seconds. The 520d is also very cost-efficient, as Parkers points out, returning 56.5mpg and emitting only 132g/km, which is impressive for a car giving out this level of performance.
While older models are perhaps overly firm in their handling, the new BMW 5 Series offers terrific ride quality, with smoothness comparable to the 7-Series. The grip around corners is great and the car feels extremely competent in all areas, despite its size.
The interior is very high quality, feeling incredibly spacious and beautifully built throughout. Leather-trimmed seating is standard across the class, and the dashboard is well laid out, with a high gloss black finish and stylish centre console completing the professional look.
As you might expect, the boot is a practical size at 520 litres in the BMW 5-Series saloon and 560 in the estate. The latter can increase to an impressive 1,670 litres when the rear seats are folded too, and its self-levelling suspension keeps the car even so that the handling isn’t affected when the car’s carrying a heavy load.
A new BMW 5 Series offers a great deal that more than justifies its price tag, and is more than deserving of your full consideration when trying to decide on your next car finance deal.
