BMW X1: a stylish performance
Based slightly around the 3-Series, the new BMW X1 Estate is the German company’s attempt at a premium mini-SUV crossover. With the esteemed BMW crest on its bonnet, this relative newbie has a reputation to uphold – does it measure up?
Well, in terms of build quality and refinement, as Parkers notes, it certainly does. Quality materials are used throughout, from the seats to the inner-side of the doors and the car feels well put together, as you would expect from BMW.
What Car? gives the X1 full marks in the performance department, with all three of the 2.0 litre diesel engines doing well. The middle of the three – the 20d – has 175bhp, which is enough for most buyers and, like the 18d, has the option of rear-wheel drive (sDrive), which returns an impressive 54mpg. Also, as Top Gear points out, low CO2 emissions mean that the tax brackets (21% for the 18d and 20d, 26% for the 23d) are favourable too.
A 420-litre boot, together with the option of tripling this capacity once the back seats are folded, means that the BMW X1 Estate offers practicality and a versatility that mirrors the larger X5. Storage in the front is also good – decent-sized pockets in the door and a cubbyhole hidden in a centre armrest mean that there’s plenty of places to keep things to hand.
Standard equipment across the range is good – rear parking sensors, electric power steering and two-zone air conditioning to name but a few. It’s also worth mentioning some of the optional add-ons such as the reversing camera, iDrive cabin control system and panoramic glass sunroof.
The new BMW X1 Estate offers enough in terms of driving performance, style and quality to rank it among not only the best in BMW’s range, but alongside more established competitors.
