Skoda: great value for money
You might be surprised to learn that Skoda has been around since the 19th century – in fact, the manufacturer has been steadily making ultra-efficient cars at ridiculously economic prices since 1899.
Now that the company is owned by the massively powerful VW Group, Skoda has the means to expand its business across the globe – China, where they only started production in 2006, has since become their largest market.
Skoda’s latest models have received plenty of praise from both ordinary drivers and car reviewers. In 2009, BBC’s Top Gear crowned the
Yeti its ‘Family Car of the Year’, whilst the
Skoda Superb was voted ‘Luxury Car of the Year.’
Top Gear has also said that Skoda’s highly capable range of cars is making it increasingly hard for the rest of the VW group to beat what is supposed to be its budget alternative. Meanwhile, Auto Express has said of the Skoda Indigo that, for such a compact car, it has an incredibly grown-up feel.
Another new Skoda highly recommended by experts’ magazine Parkers is the
Octavia, which they’ve described as one of the best family cars around. Apart from its deluxe interior, reliability, and good handling abilities, there’s also the great range of engines available on the model. However, they do agree that Skoda’s biggest strength is still its value for money.
On the environmental side of things, Skoda has been working hard too. The
Fabia Greenline II introduced new technology to improve fuel efficiency, called ‘energy optimisation’. This clever approach uses the vehicle’s kinetic energy for battery recharging – basically the idea behind a bicycle’s dynamo. Its gear recommendation system also helps the driver make the most of the engine’s potential.
