Volkswagen Polo: in a class of its own
The Volkswagen Polo is a sturdy and dependable supermini that’s been a benchmark of its class since it was first launched in 1975.
With a roomy interior, quality build and low running costs, Volkswagen Polo deals are as competitive today as ever. According to Parkers, it’s arguably the most upmarket small car that you can buy, being refined, stylish and – depending on which engine you choose – incredibly economical or delightfully quick.
Like many small cars, the Volkswagen Polo hatchback isn’t particularly roomy inside but, as Top Gear explains, comfortable seats and a compliant ride make it better than many in its class.
There’s a wide choice of engine sizes available – ranging from 1.2 litre petrol engines to a 1.6 litre diesel – most of which are smooth, reliable and willing but with an emphasis on economy rather than performance.
Engine and road noise is kept to a minimum and, according to What Car, the turbo engine provides enough power for you to keep the revs suitably low.
In terms of efficiency, all of the engines are reasonably clean but the Bluemotion 1.2 TDI outstrips them all with 91g of CO2, meaning Volkswagen Polo deals can include road tax exemption and an impressive 80mpg.
Safety is also a major attraction for those considering a new Volkswagen Polo, since it was the first small car to receive five stars in the Euro NCAP crash tests in 2009. All models come with an electronic stability programme (ESP) to help maintain control in a skid and four airbags as standard.
Aesthetically, it may not be as adventurous as some of the other superminis on the market and it isn’t particularly elaborate but, as Top Gear points out, the whole design is executed with lush materials and a watchmaker’s attention to detail.
While it may lack some of the flair of its contemporaries, for a solid and dependable supermini you can do much worse than a brand new Volkswagen Polo.
